Spreading Beyond Normal Boundaries - The Opening Reception of Dalya Luttwak's "Ground Cover: Roots of Liriope"

Having been here since August, "Ground Cover: Roots of Liriope" by Israeli-American artist, Dalya Luttwak, has attracted many visitors as it pays tribute to the artistic values that VisArts serves. With a large crowd filling the Ground Floor Atrium of the Arts and Innovation Center in Rockville Town Square, VisArts proudly inaugurated Dalya Luttwak  last night as the first artist of the "InSight" Series.

The InSight series at VisArts generates site-specific installations in non-traditional exhibition spaces. Placing contemporary art in public spaces usually thought of as pass-throughs (halls, atriums, and lobbies), VisArts encourages active looking, sociability, interaction, and encounters with art in architectural space.

Co-sponsored by the Israeli Embassy, the opening reception celebrated Luttwak's work of art.  Visitors greeted and met the artist as they learned about the process and concept behind the creation of the piece.  It was an evening that was enjoyed by all.

Last week, Devin Gong's "If Wishes Were Inches" exhibition came to an end in the Gibbs Street Gallery on July 1st.  Although we will miss the explosive colors and spatially ambiguous  compositions, the Gibbs Street Gallery is not completely empty without art.  In fact, the space is currently being occupied by artist Mei Mei Chang, who is in the midst of installing pieces for the upcoming Gibbs Street Gallery exhibition, "Mnemonic Fragmentation".  Check out some sneak peek/behind the scenes images of Chang's works as it offers a passage into a wondrous territory where thought and external forces meet.

VisArts Exhibition ____Scape 1st Artist Talk: Heidi Fowler, Kim Manfredi, Theo Willis

Thursday, June 14th, 2012:  VisArts held an artist’s talk in its Kaplan Gallery. The featured artists, Heidi Fowler, Kim Manfredi, and Theo Willis, all have works exhibited in the center’s current exhibition, ___Scape curated by Susan Main. These three artists are of diverse and differing interests, styles, and experiences.

Heidi Fowler:

First of the night to present was Heidi Fowler. Her works utilize found objects such as plastic bottle caps, envelope, and paper parts- environmentally friendly art. The use of color, seen in the materials under the translucent bottle caps, signifies the seasons. By using the bottle caps in a grid and pixel-like plane, Heidi is able to break up the surface into almost paint-stroke like fragments of basic information. Standing back, the viewer is able to see the implied landscape in each work.

No--20122-92-009 postcard copy

No. 122.92.009 by Heidi Fowler. Plastic bottle caps, junk mail, magazines and glue on panel. (48” x 48” x 2”)
