One of my favorite classes to teach at VisArts is the Cocktails and Canvas workshops. In this class adults come from all over Maryland, and even other states too, to come and paint in a relaxed, casual environment. VisArts provides an 11x14” canvas to each student that is pre-sketched with an image. Every workshop date has a different image for Cocktails and Canvas. For example, one night might be Starry Night by Van Gogh and another night would be Tree of Life by Klimt. Usually the images are well known, but sometimes we offer simple, generic images, like a basic flower. The class often starts at 7:00 pm and runs until 10:00 pm, which gives the students a full three hours to paint their masterpiece. We provide acrylic paint and paint brushes of different shapes and sizes. In addition to the painting materials, we also provide soda, water, snacks, and wine.
I love teaching the Cocktails and Canvas workshops because everyone starts with the same pre-sketched image and when the class is over, everyone leaves with an original piece of artwork! It’s amazing to see how each student have a unique style and idea of what their piece should look like. It is also interesting to see the different kinds of people who come to these workshops. Some people are couples on dates, some are family members, and some are groups of friends celebrating a Friday night. There are also people who have a lot of painting experience, but mostly, the people who come have never painted before. All of the instructors have an art background so we are always able to help the students with their technique.
