Handbuilding/Wheel: Tuesdays 3/6/12 - 5/1/12

Eight Tuesdays March 6 - May 1 (No  class 4/3)  7:00–9:00 pm Tuition: $260 We have lowered the per class price and extended the number of classes. Instructor Bruce Bowers This class covers a whole lot of territory. Instruction in hand-building, wheel and various glazes and surface decorating techniques. All students enrolled in ceramics classes have access to the Open Studio during the week and a weekend day. Open studio time is perfect to practice what you learn in class.

Begining/Intermediate Sculpture: Saturdays 3/31/12 - 6/16/12

Ten Saturdays 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 pm March 31 - June 16 (No class 4/7 and 5/26) Instructor: Ricardo Pontes Tuition: $180 Model fee extra and to be paid to instructor Express yourself through sculpture. Participants will be introduced to the fundamental principles of scuplture by working with a model and one-on-one instruction. Tuition includes two bags of clay. Model and firing fees are extra.

Fiber Techniques in Metal Crocheting with Metal

2 Wednesdays April 11 - April 18 7:00-9:00 pm Registration: $70 This series of classes introduces the student to the basics of metal fiber techniques with an emphasis on the versatlity of wire crocheting. At the end of every session you will have a piece of jewelry to show for your efforts. Big Hands, Little Hands: Thursdays 4/12/12 - 5/17/12

Six Thursdays April 12 - May 17  9:30 - 10:30 am Fee: $120 each 6-week session. What could be more fun than a little parent-child bonding while producing your very own work of art? We provide the clay and glaze and you and your child provide the imagination! Our instructor will encourage parent and child in the joy of pinching and coiling clay to make an animal, bowl, or vase (or whatever you dream up!) and then together you and your child will glaze your creations.

Getting to Know Clay: Thursdays 4/12/12 - 5/17/12

Six Thursdays April 12 - May 17 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Tuition: $120 Clay is a wonderful medium for young hands and minds to explore as it is easy to manipulate and its transformation from raw material to finished product is amazing to both young and old. This six-week course covers the three basic handbuilding techniques of pinch, coil and slab through hands-on creation of forms that appeal to children. While this course is loads of fun it also slips in important ceramic concepts such as slipping, scoring, wedging and stages of drying. For children in grades K-5.

Dare to Draw Saturday 4/14- 5/19

6 Saturdays April 14,2012 - May 19,2012 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuition $100 It’s true, with the rise of online children’s educational programming; more and more kids never experience the thrill of drawing by hand. Not only have they missed the joy of creativity, they are also missing out on the techniques learned by doodling and drawing. This class combines fun with technique as kids use charcoal, pastels, ink, markers and pencils while learning real drawing concepts at an age appropriate level. We don’t promise your child will leave as a budding Picasso, but we know that your child will have a great time and will learn techniques that will stay with them always.

Digital Photography and Photoshop (Young Adults) - April 16-May 21

Six Mondays April 16 - May 21 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. Tuition: $135 This is a class for students that are very focused in gaining intermediate digital arts skills. Students will be able to apply photoshop software and other digital technology such as digital cameras and scanners to create a multitude of projects. This is a great opportunity to sign up with a friend to design digital artworks to include animations and work as a design team.Individuals are also encouraged to sign up and will be paired in design teams. This requires no experience and with the help of our glass teachers you can make a beautiful glass wind chime, picture frame, nightlight, suncatcher or 4 x 8 slumped plate. Or you can sandblast a cup, plate or votive holder. Price for projects range from $10 to $28. Please pay in administrative office. This open studio is for 7 and up only with a maximum of 15.  No online registration.

May 3 - June 28 7:00 - 9:00 pm Tuition: $230 Special Spring Rates $150 Instructor: Marjorie Forgues The analysis and execution of a detailed drawing in charcoal from a live model. The students will be taught to understand the structure and process of developing a realistic drawing as well as mastering the medium of charcoal.

Basic Digital Photography Boot Camp May 5

Saturday, May 5 9:00-4:00 pm Tuition: $75.00 Have you ever tried to re-create an image that sparked emotion in you, only to be disappointed with the result? Do you look at all of the different adjustment settings on your camera and wonder what they are for? Join us for an intense one-day workshop as we unearth these and many other mysteries of "Capturing That Perfect Image" with your Digital SLR camera. Learn the basics of aperture (f-stops), shutter speed, ISO and how they relate to exposure and image aesthetics. Discover the fundamentals of composition and how moving just a few inches can completely change the impact of your image. Your instructor will also introduce you to the basics concepts of light and how to "look for" the lighting that best portrays what you are trying to capture. A brief discussion of digital file formats, compression, and aspect ratios will be included. This workshop is for beginning photographers who own a Digital SLR camera with manual adjustment capabilities who wish to learn how to use it more creatively. Instructor: Marlene Frazier

Glass Fusing Basics I [May 9, 2012]

Wednesday, May 9 11:00 am - 2:00 pm Tuition: $75.00 This class is an introduction to fused glass and is a prerequisite for participating in our Open Studio time. It is the first step into the wonderful world of kiln formed glass. During the class you create a 7 x 7 dish and 3 jewelry pendants while you learn all about glass- how to cut, shape and lay up your glass ready to be fired; how to choose the kiln firing schedule to acheive the look you desire; and how the glass itself reacts to having fuse temperature heat applied to it. After this class you can participate in our Open Studio time or continue on to any of the other classses at VisArts Glass Studio.

Wheel Away the Day - Grades 6-8: Wednesdays 5/9/12 - 6/13/12

Six Wednesdays May 9 - 6/13 Grades 6 - 8 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Tuition: $150 For the first time ever VisArts is offering wheel classes to young adults.  This class will introduce young learners to the basic concepts of wheel throwing: centering, opening and pulling forms. Throwing on the wheel takes time and practise, but it can be well worth the time it demands. Please don't expect a new set of dishes from your budding artists; they will consider themselves a success if they can move past the lump stage! This class will be limited to no more than 4 students so that each can receive individualized attention.

Introduction to the Potter’s Wheel: Wednesdays 5/9/12 - 6/13/12

6 Wednesdays May 9 - June 13 7:00-9:00 pm Tuition: $230 Includes 25 # of clay and all needed tools. Are you curious about the potter's wheel? Then come and get your hands wet and see what all the hype is about. This eight-week class covers the basics of the wheel and its capability to transform a lump of dirt into a beautiful vessel. You will learn how to prepare/wedge clay for throwing on a wheel. Students will master centerin, opening, and pulling forms to create bowls, cylinders, and vases. In the last two sessions, students will work on trimming and simple glazing techniques that can be applied to leather hard works and glazing of pieces. This class also includes  access to Open Studio.  Open Studio is the perfect time to practice what you learn.
