F.E.A.S.T. Winner Announced!
Patterson Clark is the winner of the first FEAST at VisArts grant award.
FEAST at VisArts grant winner Patterson Clark’s proposed design of the print for Croydon Creek Nature Center, to be made of invasive-plant inks letterpress-printed from a weed-wood block onto Garlic Mustard paper.
The first-ever FEAST at VisArts was held on March 24, 2012 in the Gibbs Street and Kaplan Galleries. After a delicious meal of locally grown and wild foraged food prepared by chef Andre Cavallaro, the 75 FEAST diners in attendance reviewed and voted for their favorite of four project proposals that addressed the theme of sustainability. Patterson Clark’s project “The Invasive Plant” won the most votes. He received a grant of $1,000 from a portion of the FEAST ticket price to process plants from a volunteer weed pull at Rockville’s Croydon Creek Nature Center on April 22, Earth Day.
The plants will be made into paper and inks that will be used to make a limited-edition relief print that will refer to the labor and raw materials used to make the print. Prints will be sold for $25 each at the nature center to help generate funds for the center’s permanent exhibits or for future invasive species removal projects. Proceeds from the sale of the print would be split 50/50 between the artist and the nature center. Volunteers weed pullers are invited to attend an introductory class, Prospecting for Materials from Invasive Plants, currently scheduled for April 14th at VisArts (fee: $10-dollar donation to VisArts). Those volunteers would be invited to help with the processing of weeds removed at the nature center.

FEAST at VisArts (Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics) hopes to develop a bridge between artists and the community. FEAST is a public dinner designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund new and emerging art makers. The first FEAST at VisArts will take place on March 24, 2012 in the Gibbs Street Gallery in Rockville, Maryland. Patrons will give a $30 donation for which they receive supper and a ballot. Diners spend the evening reviewing a series of project proposals and conversing with the artists behind each idea. Attendees cast a vote for their favorite proposal, and by the end of the night, the artist who garners the most votes is awarded a grant comprised of that evening’s door money.
FEAST at VisArts #1 will feature a meal of locally grown food prepared by chef Andre Cavallaro of Sub Urban Trading Company, Kensington, MD. To participate in the March FEAST, the first 75 guests who pay $30 (per person) will be eligible to enjoy dinner, a review of proposals and to vote on their project selection for an immediate FEAST grant.
FEAST at VisArts #1 invites artists, thinkers, and organizations to submit proposals for funding up to $1,000. Project proposals for FEAST at VisArts #1 will address the theme SUSTAINABILITY. FEAST at VisArts is based on FEAST Brooklyn’s (www.feastinbklyn.org) model for sustaining artist projects directly through community participation.
FEAST at VisArts will be held in conjunction with the VisArts exhibition, FIELD WORK, presenting the work of nine artists who investigate the relationships between community, resources, sustainability and art.
