Resident Artist Program Overview
One of the ways that VisArts accomplishes its mission to engage the community in the arts is through its Resident Artist Program. The ability to see works of art in progress as well as the opportunity to talk to artists about their work and their process creates a unique context for our visitors.
VisArts is home to nine resident artists who work in glass, jewelry, ceramics, painting, illustration, sculpture, Chinese calligraphy, and metal working. Our artist studios, which are located on the second floor along with our Kaplan and Common Ground Galleries, serve as a catalyst for conversation, education and creative interactions.
Each year, VisArts resident artists complete a jurying process as part of their application and are eligible to renew for four additional one year terms. Artists are expected to actively work in their studios a minimum of thirty hours per week with fifteen of those hours during the hours that VisArts is open to the public. Artists are required to open their studios during all opening receptions for Kaplan Gallery exhibitions and to participate in two community events per year. VisArts encourages artists to teach in their studios.
