VisArts in Rockville Town Square is a unique destination for arts and culture in the metropolitan area.  Part of VisArts’ mission is to engage people as a dynamic arts destination by presenting vibrant exhibitions and programs that challenge, inspire and expand the understanding of visual arts.  One of the ways that VisArts accomplishes this mission is through its Resident Artist Program.  The ability to see works of art in progress as well as the opportunity to talk to artists about their work and their process creates a unique context for our visitors.

VisArts is home to sixteen resident artists who work in glass, jewelry, weaving, painting, illustration, Chinese calligraphy, quilting and metal working.  Our studios, which are located on the second floor along with our Kaplan and Common Ground Galleries, range in size from 188 square feet to 2500 square feet.  Most studios have windows and natural light and all have twenty four hour access and daily cleaning.  The artist studios serves as a catalyst for conversation, education and creative interactions.

VisArts resident artists sign annual lease agreements and are eligible to renew these leases for four additional one year terms.  Artists are expected to actively work in their studios a minimum of thirty hours per week with fifteen of those hours during the hours that VisArts is open to the public.  Artists are expected to open their studios during all opening receptions for Kaplan Gallery exhibitions and to participate in two community events per year.  VisArts encourages artists to teach in their studios and takes no commission from this art instruction.  In addition, VisArts takes no commission from the sales of work from the resident artist studios.  The annual per square foot rental rate for 2012 is $21.50 and includes utilities.
