Disability, visible and invisible, takes many forms. Creating Inclusion highlights the work of aspiring, emerging, and established artists who identify as people with disabilities. Each artist has his or her own artistic presence and practice. Brought together by the common thread of disability identity, rather than artistic content or theme, this collection of works conceptualizes disability identity as variegated and nuanced. As part of our mission to build community through the arts, VisArts has partnered with organizations to include people with disabilities in our arts education classes, artist residencies, and exhibitions. Creating Inclusion raises awareness of both inclusion by design and inclusion that is naturally occurring within our community. Through this exhibition, we encourage active and thoughtful inclusion of all disability identities. Ultimately, the exhibition becomes a place to realize and pursue our own explorations of disability and community.
