For eight years, in all seasons, Julius Kassovic has been photographing the transient beauty in the waters of a small, polluted urban creek. Up close, sometimes with the lens almost in the water, light and shadows and reflections and water and ice behave in ways that cannot be captured with dry feet. Trees, skies, leaves, pebbles, grasses and junk combine to form magical waterscapes: vistas upside-down; horizons askew; backgrounds as foregrounds; startling colors.

The photos are tight compositions of the reflections of trees in, and the movement of leaves through, the creek’s waters. The reflections do not serve simply as mirrors, but as devices to explore the interplay of light and water (or ice). Minimal post-processing is needed to reveal the beauty of these liquidly ephemeral visions.

About the Artist: Julius Kassovic is a photographer, writer and researcher. His experiences as an ethnographic and Peace Corp project-oriented photography have profoundly influenced on his approach to fine art photography forcing him to push beyond surface impressions and be sensitive to nuance.
