Negotiated Space is a 45-minute sites-specific piece choreographed by Sandra C. Atkinson, Artistic Director of Light Switch Dance Theatre (LSDT). The work uses dance to investigate the psychological and neurological affects of space. In a world where space is increasingly limited, Negotiated Space asks: what happens to us emotionally, mentally and physically when elements in our space are constantly altered? Do we shift ourselves in space, time and effort in response to changes in the space around us? Etched (performances on June 13 and 15, 2014) is a Contemporary Jazz evening length Concert piece that examines the concept of “negotiated space” through racial boundaries which was a catalyst of the Civil Right Movement. Each of the 5 sections of Etched is inspired by the work of artists Zoe Charlton, Theaster Gates, Norman Lewis, Betye Saar, and Carrie Mae Weems.
